Train de la Rhune new diesel locomotive train, Sare, France. The new System Strub racks were supplied by the Swiss company Tensol Rail. In the process, a two-axle diesel rack-and-pinion locomotive from Stadler Rail was also purchased for the construction work and later for emergencies, an aluminium-built rescue car for possible evacuations, a wagon for inspecting and repairing the overhead line, as well as other aids, although during the last 99 years there had only been one emergency where such aids would have been helpful.

The dusty blue reflection nebulas Messier 78 (bottom) and NGC 2071 (top) in Orion near the red arc of Barnard's Loop at left. A fan-shaped reflection nebula above NGC 2071 is not identified on any charts I had. Dark dust lanes run through the region and colour the sky brown. The tiny variable nebula known as McNeil's Nebula is below M78. Remarkably, some small 16th magnitude galaxies in the PGC catalog are recorded amid the dust at upper right in the frame.

Mars is about to be occulted by the Full Moon on December 7, 2022. This is ingress with the eastward moving (i.e. right to left here) Moon about to cover up Mars on the Moon's western limb. The sky had thin cloud adding the colourful halo, or "corona," around the Moon, so the sky is not black.

Cham children playing games, Chau Doc, Vietnam. Final day in the Mekong Delta. We visited a cham minority village. When these children realised we weren’t going to buy their heart shaped waffles that, according to a sign, would give us ”cronic”, they returned to paying their games. Had fun and games on the Cambodian border after, on instruction, our group refused to pay the extra dollar demanded by the border control guy. Not a happy man…

Aurora reflected in the calm waters of Frame Lake this evening and arching over the Prince of Wales Museum in Yellowknife, NWT, on Sept 5, 2019. The Museum exterior is lit by rippling coloured LED lights that mimic the aurora. The Big Dipper and Ursa Major are above the aurora. The arc of the Lights was brighter earlier on this evening but had faded by the time I got set, but came back somewhat, as I shot here. I shot this from Somba K’e Park.

This is a telephoto lens panorama of a low and late-season display of noctilucent clouds in the north on August 7, 2022. This was the latest I had seen NLCs from my latitude of 51° N. This was taken from home in southern Alberta on a night which also featured a Kp5-level aurora show that included STEVE.

An all-sky aurora with green and purple curtains, the night of June 7-8, 2014, starting up about 12:30 and going until dawn. This shot was near its peak, from the old barn site near home in southern Alberta. Foreground illumination is from the aurora and ambient sky -- the Moon had set. The Big Dipper is above the Barn. The purple colour is from blue scatttered sunlight hitting the red tops of the auroral curtains. This was with the 16-35mm lens at f/3.2 for 20 seconds at ISO 1600 with the Canon 6D.

Horizon-to-zenith panorama of the northern winter sky, from Canis Major in the south just above the horizon to Cassiopeia past the zenith at the top of the frame. Capella is near the zenith above centre. The extra star at left is Mars, just 10 days past opposition, on Feb. 9, 2010, when it was just above the Beehive star cluster. Taken with Canon 5DMkII and Canon 15mm lens, at f/5 for stack of 3 exposures x 4.5 minutes each at ISO 800. Two exposures had frost on the lens, thus the big star haloes. Taken from southern Alberta, Canada.

Circumpolar star trails on a moonlit night in the Gila National Forest in southern New Mexico, north of Pinos Altos. Polaris is at upper left, the Little Dipper hanging below it, and the stars of the Big Dipper are rising at right, with the end star of the handle still to clear the horizon. Illumination is from the waxing quarter Moon. The night had a lot of high cloud drifting through, adding the streaks and patchiness to the sky.

A framing of the converging rays of aurora overhead at the magnetic zenith,a little south of the true zenith at 90° altitude. This was the superb Kp6 to 7 display on March 23,2023,with the aurora mostly in a pulsating mode rather than forming rippling curtains. This was early on in the evening when the sky still had some twilight colours, and with sunlight illuminating the high curtains. Orion is at lower right.

A group of aurora tourists take their aurora selfies at Prosperous Lake, near Yellowknife, NWT, a popular spot on the Ingraham Trail for aurora watching. This is looking west during a bright outbreak in the display this night, which previously had been just a dull wash over the sky. This was about 1:15 a.m. MDT.

This captures a panorama of the northern sky over the foreground landscape of Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta, with the waning Moon rising, and an arc of Northern Lights above the northern horizon. A Kp6 show was forecast for this night but nothing spectacular materialized -- we had just a quiescent arc across the north.

Hotel Saint Georges destroyed by the Civil War, Beirut. A big dispute confronts the owners of the Saint George hotel with SOLIDERE, the real estate company of Rafic Hariri. The hotel has always had spa facilities that gave it its cache. This is what SOLIDERE opposes, which aims to be the exclusive operator of the Saint Georges bay that dominates the hotel. This dispute has paralyzed the project of renovation of the establishment. For ten years Rafic Hariri alternated coercive measures and purchase offers in the purest tradition of Italian practices illustrated in the film Hands on the city.

This is the line-up of planets across the southwestern sky on December 6, 2021, consisting of (L to R): Jupiter, Saturn and Venus, with the 2.5-day-old waxing crescent Moon in conjunction below Venus. The Moon had eclipsed the Sun two days before on December 4, when it was on the ecliptic. Two days later it was below the ecliptic line. Jupiter and Saturn are in Capricornus, with its stars all visible here in the evening twilight. The three planets are nicely equally spaced. Such an array makes the ecliptic line visible.

Comet Wirtanen (aka 46P) as it appeared in my sky on November 28, 2018 with it still only 17° above my southern horizon, so partly in haze. The comet was obvious in big 10x70mm binoculars as a large diffuse glow. Wirtanen was moving north and had just entered my western Canadian sky the week I took this.

Hundreds of thousands of marine animals (fish, reptiles, birds and mammals) die every year in abandoned fishing gear in the ocean; cables, ghost nets, fishing lines, etc. Some of them die of drowning, others of hunger, because they are unable to feed themselves and others suffer from infected wounds. It is difficult for animals to defend themselves against these modern dangers for which evolution has not had time to prepare them. USA
