It is an unbelievable and unmissable destination for anyone visiting Java or Bali. Not only is the view on the 4km walk up to the craters edge impressive, but what goes on there is mind boggling. Walking down to the bottom of Kwah Ijen (Ijen Crater), hundreds of Indonesian men, many in flipflops, are mining sulphur from the heart of the volcano. They load their baskets up with up to 80kg of sulphur, before starting the arduous and extremely dangerous scramb

Officially this was no better than a weak Kp1 level aurora this night but for a time the Lights brightened enough to show colour even to the eye including the pink nitrogen fringe at the bottom of the curtains. This is looking north from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre on the first night of the first group of the 2023 aurora season for the CNSC.

The aptly-named Coathanger Cluster,a more properly an asterism of stars in Vulpecula. A true star cluster,NGC 6802,lies at the left end of the coathanger arm. The field contains diffuse blue reflection nebulosity which appears to not have a catalogue number. The small round emission nebula at bottom is Sharpless 2-82. A very small round red nebula above the right end of the Coathanger is Sh2-83.

This is the nebula rich region in the constellation of Monoceros the Unicorn with the dark Cone Nebula (left of centre) and the small V-shaped and bright Hubble’s Variable Nebula at bottom, a reflection nebula that varies in form and brightness. Above the Cone Nebula is the triangular Christmas Tree Cluster, NGC 2264, here upside down as the bright blue star 15 Mon is the base of the tree. The large region of nebulosity is Sharpless 2-273. The V-shaped dark nebula above centre is LDN 1603.
