A fish-eye lens / all-sky view of the STEVE aurora arc across the sky and in clouds on May 6, 2018, from home in southern Alberta, with a diffuse aurora to the north casting streaks of purple up the sky, and a green glow along the horizon. This night the aurora was very active to the north and east with a terrific display in Churchill, Manitoba about an hour before this, matching the usual STEVE characteristic of him appearing as a major storm subsides.

Gemini and Auriga are at top, in this case near the zenith overhead. The bright star clusters, M44, the Beehive, (at left) and M45, the Pleiades, (at right) flank the Milky Way. M45 is embedded in the Zodiacal Light. The star clusters M35 in Gemini and M41 in Canis Major are also visible as diffuse spots, as are several other star clusters. A couple of satellite trails are visible.

The spectacular field of Messier 8 and 20 emission and reflection nebulas in Sagittarius, with M8, aka the Lagoon Nebula below, and M20, the Trifid Nebula, above, all set in the rich starfields of the Milky Way. The diffuse nebula left of M8 is NGC 6559. Two globular clusters, NGC 6544 and NGC 6553, sit below and to the left (east) of M8. The Messier open cluster, M21, sits above M20.

This was Feb 5, 2019 from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. The outburst lasted only 5 minutes or so and might have been due to the Bz interplanetary field turning south briefly. After this series, the display faded and fractured into faint arcs and a diffuse glow across the sky.

The aptly-named Coathanger Cluster,a more properly an asterism of stars in Vulpecula. A true star cluster,NGC 6802,lies at the left end of the coathanger arm. The field contains diffuse blue reflection nebulosity which appears to not have a catalogue number. The small round emission nebula at bottom is Sharpless 2-82. A very small round red nebula above the right end of the Coathanger is Sh2-83.

The field contains diffuse blue reflection nebulosity which appears to not have a catalogue number. The small round emission nebula at bottom is Sharpless 2-82. A very small round red nebula above the right end of the Coathanger is Sh2-83.

The 22° halo is most obvious and with a reddish and sharper inner rim.,and a bluish and more diffuse outer edge. But a faint inner 8° halo is also visible,a rare halo sometimes called the Van Buijsen Halo (according to Lynch and Livingston in their book Color and Light in Nature; Minnaert also mentions it in his seminal book The Nature of Color and Light in the Open Air). It is not a lens flare as shots taken with the Moon well off to one side of the frame still show the inner halo centred on the Moo

Comet Wirtanen (aka 46P) as it appeared in my sky on November 28, 2018 with it still only 17° above my southern horizon, so partly in haze. The comet was obvious in big 10x70mm binoculars as a large diffuse glow. Wirtanen was moving north and had just entered my western Canadian sky the week I took this.
