Orion and Taurus (at top) beside the Milky Way, with Betelgeuse dimmer than usual at this time (about magnitude +1.3) during one of its fading episodes. The Taurus Dark Clouds are at top. Barnard’s Loop, apparently now thought to be a supernova remnant and not a bubble, is at lower left encircling Orion. The Rosette Nebula is at far left. The Auriga clusters and nebulas are at top, as is M35 in Gemini.

The International Space Station (ISS) flying away to the east over the moonlit badlands formations at Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta, on July 12, 2022, just before local midnight. The image frames the stars of Cassiopeia (upper left), Perseus (at left), Andromeda (centre) and Pegasus (at right). A couple of other fainter satellites are also in the image. Light from the almost Full Moon illuminates the sky blue and foreground a warm colour.

A horizon-to-zenith panorama of the winter consellations on a March evening as they set into the southwest. Orion is at bottom centre, with his Belt pointing down to Canis Major and up to Taurus. Gemini and Auriga are at top, in this case near the zenith overhead. The bright star clusters, M44, the Beehive, (at left) and M45, the Pleiades, (at right) flank the Milky Way. M45 is embedded in the Zodiacal Light. The star clusters M35 in Gemini and M41 in Canis Major are also visible as diffuse spots, as are several other star clusters. A couple of satellite trails are visible.

A selfie of me gazing at the sky while the camera and telescope shoot deep-sky targets with the auto-guided equatorial mount and astrographic reflector telescope. An aurora is kicking up to the left in the northeast. Orion is rising at centre in the east. I shot this Thanksgiving evening, October 13m, 2015, from the backyard at home in southern Alberta. It is part of a 730-frame time-lapse.

Sunset colours over White Sands National Monument, New Mexico, December 10, 2013. Venus is at left of centre. This is an HDR (High Dynamic Range) stack of 7 exposures at 2/3 stop increments from -2 to +2 EV, processed first with ACR then with Photomatix Pro. Images taken with the 14mm Rokinon lens at f/4 and Canon 5D MkII at ISO 100. While colour vibrancy has been enhanced the colours to the eye were quite vivid. The HDR technique brings out details in the dark ground while preserving the bright sky.

A small cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) still in its egg, about 1 cm whole size. Eyes, head and tentacles are already perfectly formed and defined, this means that only a few days are left to hatch, although the little cephalopod is still connected to its yolk sac. This picture is part of a work that features a special Italian place, Numana, on the Adriatic sea, where very specific geographical conditions make this spot a realm for underwater macro subjects, pretty much like Philippines or Indonesia.

A 150° panorama of the auroral arc across the northern sky, shot from home in Alberta on April 27, 2022. The camera picked up the blue colour at the top of the curtains at left in the northwest from high-altitude sunlight illuminating the tops of the curtains. Otherwise, oxygen reds and greens dominate this fairly quiet display. Coincidentally, the arc of the aurora nicely follows the arc of the Milky Way across the north, then at its lowest for the year in the spring sky.
