Polaris is at upper left, the Little Dipper hanging below it, and the stars of the Big Dipper are rising at right, with the end star of the handle still to clear the horizon. Illumination is from the waxing quarter Moon. The night had a lot of high cloud drifting through, adding the streaks and patchiness to the sky.

The setting Sun descending into a fog bank looking due west,on the evening of the vernal equinox,March 20,2023. The fog dims and reddens the Sun,illustrating atmospheric absorption, and refraction as the solar disk is quite flattened. A couple of sunspots are just visible. The colour gradient is natural and comes from the blend of fog below and clearer twilight sky above.

Open star clusters around the Carina Nebula are NGC 3532 (at upper left of nebula), IC 2602, the Southern Pleiades (below the nebula), and NGC 3114 (right of nebula). Taken on a hazy night, so the glows around stars are natural and not introduced from a filter. A scene looking west on January 16, 2015 but with a field stretching up to and beyond the zenith overhead, taking in the Zodiacal Light stretching up to the Pleiades at upper left. Just below the Pleiades is green Comet Lovejoy, with its faint ion tail pointing away from the Sun along the same plane as the Zodiacal Light, as it should. Ion tails always point directly away from the Sun, as they are blown out by the solar wind. Comet Lovejoy was crossing the ecliptic this night, as it heads north in its orbit traveling almost perpendicular to the ecliptic plane.

A tourist swims in a cenote on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. Cenotes are a geologic formation that characterizes the Yucatan Peninsula. This word is derived from the Mayan word,'Dzonot' which means; sacred well. More specifically, the word cenote refers to a large natural sink hole whose limestone covering has caved in years ago to reveal the running stream below. While some of these structures are simply vertical shafts filled with water, others are composed of underwater passageways.
